One Holocaust survivor, Simon Winstan, who lived in Ukraine, recounted that only 2, 000 out of 7, 000 people in his town survived. He was taken to a ghetto-a place of slow death-and remained unaware of the concentration camps un-til 1942 when he was sent to Auschwitz.
Today, many visitors tour Auschwitz, which once comprised 20 blocks where prisoners lived. Now, traces of many build-ings, incinerators, and medical centers where inhumane ex-periments were conducted have disappeared. More than 3 mil-lion Jews were killed between 1941 and 1945. In post-war East Germany, which fell under Soviet control, the Holocaust was framed as a war against capitalism, with West Germany being blamed. Consequently, the Soviet Union largely avoided dis-cussing the Holocaust. More information has since been col-lected from archives in the UK and the USA, as well as from war research centre.
